Dante & Canapés - 6-week course on Italian masterpiece
Dante & Canapés
Dante’s Divine Comedy is a masterwork of Italian literature and one of the most influential poems ever written. Join us for a six-week introductory course in which Katie Bastiman, local Dante scholar and JCG teacher of French and Italian, will guide readers through Dante’s depiction of Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise.
The course will provide an overview of the whole text as well as a closer look at some of the most the most impactful passages of this 700-year-old poem. Through discussion of Dante’s religious and political ideas, as well as the lasting legacy that this work has left on art and culture, readers will develop a nuanced appreciation of Dante’s contribution to literary history and will be equipped to explore the text further at their own pace. Canapés will be provided and each session will include a short break. The course will be taught entirely in English - no knowledge of Italian is required.
